On Monday 8th May, some of the UK’s biggest pub media joined Startle and BT Sport to compete with pubs across the country in a digital nationwide quiz.
Members of the Morning Advertiser, Pub and Bar Magazine, Hotel F&B and BT Sport all came together at The King’s Arms pub in Fulham to take part in one of our most anticipated Startle Quiz events to date.
Meanwhile, players across the UK were competing in their local pubs to reach the top of both the local and nationwide scoreboards.
With quizzes scheduled for every evening, Startle Quiz goes live in any enabled venue as soon as their screens are switched on. Once the teams have registered online, they’re then ready to compete and see where their team places on our live digital scoreboard.
With rounds covering topics from music and celebrity culture to politics and history, teams used their digital devices, ‘Quickeys’, to select their answers to multiple choice questions, with more points scored the quicker they answered.
As usual, teams were also allowed the use of one Joker, giving them the opportunity to score double points in one chosen round. With mixed areas of expertise in every quiz team, players had to decide in which topic their widest collective knowledge lay - never an easy task when competitive streaks come out!
After each round, it was evident that the local competition in Fulham was very tight, as different teams nabbed the top spot after every few questions. As the tension increased, the drive to achieve first place heightened.

Following a tense final round, the top three scoring teams were announced on both the local and nationwide scoreboards.
The results were in; one of BT Sport’s four teams dominated the local competition in Fulham, securing eighth place out of a total sixty-seven teams playing across the country.
In second place locally were Pub and Bar Magazine, who were close runners up.
Over in Warwickshire, quiz fanatics from The Horseshoe Inn, Shipston on Stour, celebrated as they secured the nationwide win! As regular players of Startle Quiz, the winning team proved their trivia prowess and received their well-deserved cash prize of £200.
As the evening came to a close, it was evident that players wanted to go back for more, suggesting that a rematch may be on the cards!
With thousands of questions in the Startle Quiz system, enabled venues can tune in and play the quiz any evening they like. This gives pubs and bars the opportunity to run regular quiz events and provide a great entertainment format for any chosen date or occasion.
The lack of paperwork and planning needed allows landlords and employees to join in with the entertainment and focus on ensuring their customers have the most enjoyable experience.
Our digital quizzes are guided by a virtual quizmaster, so the pressure is taken off a venue’s own host. Pub managers can simply switch on their Startle Quiz systems, hand out their Quickeys, and encourage teams as they work their way through the rounds!
Each Startle Quiz pub or bar can also benefit from integrating their systems with our Music, Jukebox and Signage products to enhance the experience. With a vast library of music, the opportunity for customers to make their own track selections, and the ability to display adverts and bespoke designs on TV screens, achieving a great technology and entertainment offering in venues is made much simpler through our multifunctional hardware, the Startle Player.
